Although the mountains in Czech Republic do not reach the heights of the Tatras in Slovakia or the Balkan mountain ranges in Bulgaria, they offer good terrain and excellent snow. By mid-December 2005, for example, most of the ski hills in Czech Republic boasted 150+ cm.

The main ski resorts of Czech Republic include Spindleruv Mlyn (the biggest and most well-known) as well as Ramzova/Petrikov, Praded/Ovcarna, and Cervenohorske Sedlo in northern Moravia. For Spindleruv Mlyn ski pictures click here and for northern Moravia ski pictures click here.

However, both the mountain ranges north of Prague and Brno are covered with smaller ski areas which also offer interesting skiing at a fraction of the already cheap prices. In mid-Moravia there is the Beskydy Mountain range, which is one of the last mountain recreation areas in Czech Republic to see major foreign investment but still offers quality facilities.

What are the opportunities for ski properties though or cottages in these areas?

In most of the areas there is still very good value to be found for a year-round recreational area in terms of the price of properties.

Let me give some examples.

One client recently purchased a beautiful, year round recreational cottage close to Spindleruv Mlyn, pictured to the right. It is situated on an 8000 m2 meadow in the northern Bohemia's Krkonose mountains. There is only one neighbor and 4000 m2 of property was included in the package bought. The cabin was also fully furnished and ready for all season use. More pictures can be seen on their website at ski-cottage.com. The price paid? 2 600 000 CZK (approximately 91 500 EURO or 62 500 GBP or $111 000 USD based on the latest exchange rates).

Why did they buy in this area? This is what David and Marit Nielsen-Man from Denmark had to say about their decision:

"We are great fans of outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking and paragliding. After a skiing vacation in Spindleruv Mlyn last year, we realized that all this can be found in the region. We also noticed that the tourism trade in the region is rapidly developing. This cottage is a good example of the value and quality of recreation properties available in Czech Republic.
