Hradec Kralove. On the golden road.

Hradec Kralove all through history has made a statement.

It was a protected city of queen Elisabeth of Bohemia in the 14th century.

It was the first city to take up the national cause in the Hussite wars.

It was the decisive and final battle of the Austro-Prussian war and became a center of modern architecture during Czechoslovakia’s celebrated golden era, the 1st Republic by the famous architect Josef Gucar.

Hradec Kralove has always been at the crossroads of economic prosperity.

Located at the confluence of the Labe and Orlice rivers the city’s economy has been based on food-processing technology, photochemical and electronics manufacturing. It is also a center of traditional industry where the PETROF piano company was founded in 1864.

The Region’s gross domestic product accounted for only 4.5 % of the CR’s GDP in 2007, but converted to GDP it amounts to 85.2 % of national average and ranks sixth in the CR (after Prague, Stredoceský, Plzenský, Jihomoravský, and Jihoceský regions).

While similar, they are not the same as the cities complement each other in development. Not far from Hradec Kralove was the great final battle between Prussia and Austria near Chlum. Both armies made their stand because of the agreeable lay of the land.
